Do social listening tools include API access?
By Anil Salvi
Short answer
It varies enormously, and it is the most common hidden cost in this category. Awario includes API access on every plan from $29 a month and Octolens from $159. Syften opens it at $49.95 and Buska at $99. At the other end, Brand24 sells it as a paid add-on at $149 a month on top of your plan, Mentionlytics opens it on a $499 tier, and BrandMentions restricts it to enterprise plans starting at $1,099. Same feature, roughly 38x difference in the price of reaching it, and it is rarely mentioned in a demo.
- API access ranges from included at $29 a month to enterprise-only at $1,099.
- It is the difference between a tool you can build on and a dashboard someone has to remember to open.
- Webhooks and MCP access follow the same pattern and are often a tier above the REST API.
- Decide whether you need it before shortlisting, because it can reorder the entire list on price.
Where does API access sit, by vendor?
Published plan positions, read off each vendor's pricing page on 17 September 2026.
| Vendor | API from | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Awario | $29/mo | Every plan |
| Syften | $49.95/mo | Webhooks and MCP at $119.95 |
| Buska | $99/mo | 500 requests a month at that tier |
| Octolens | $159/mo | Every plan, with webhooks and MCP |
| Brand24 | $199/mo + $149 add-on | Sold separately from the plan |
| Mentionlytics | $499/mo | Four tiers above entry |
| BrandMentions | $1,099/mo | Enterprise only |
Do you actually need the API?
Not everyone does. It matters when the data has to leave the dashboard, and the honest test is whether anyone outside the marketing team will ever need a mention.
- You need it if alerts must reach an on-call rota, a CRM, or a system that pages someone.
- You need it if listening data belongs in a dashboard your leadership already reads, rather than in a second tool they will not open.
- You need it if an agency has to pull client data into its own reporting.
- You probably do not need it if one team reads the digest and acts in the tool, which describes most small teams honestly.
What should you check beyond whether an API exists?
- Rate limits. Some plans include an API with a request cap low enough to make continuous sync impractical.
- Whether historical data is reachable, or only new mentions from the point of integration.
- Whether webhooks exist, which for alerting is more useful than polling an API.
- Whether there is an MCP server, if you want an assistant to query your own listening data directly.
- Whether CSV export is available on lower tiers as a fallback, which covers reporting even without an API.
Where BrandRobin sits on this table
BrandRobin puts webhooks and the REST API on Growth at $129 a month. Awario is cheaper at $29 and this page says so; the comparison that matters is against the vendors that gate the same feature behind $499 and $1,099 tiers.
- Webhooks and REST API on Growth at $129 a month
- Against Mentionlytics at $499 and BrandMentions at $1,099 for the same capability
- No separate add-on fee, unlike a $149-a-month bolt-on
- CSV export on every plan, including Starter at $49
Frequently asked questions
- Why do vendors gate API access so aggressively?
- Because it changes what the product is. Once data flows out freely, the dashboard stops being the destination and the tool becomes a data source, which is harder to justify a per-seat price for. Gating it protects both the seat model and the upgrade path.
- Is CSV export a substitute?
- For periodic reporting, largely yes, and it is available on lower tiers almost everywhere. It is not a substitute for anything automated: no alerting, no CRM sync, no pipeline.
- What is an MCP server and does it matter?
- It lets an assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT query a tool's data directly, so you can ask questions of your own mentions rather than exporting them first. A handful of vendors now ship one. It is genuinely useful if your team already works that way and irrelevant if not.

What people ask next
How much do social listening tools cost?
Entry plans run from about $30 to $2,500 a month. What moves the number is mention volume, keyword count and whether API access is included or sold as an enterprise upgrade.
Read the answerWhy do social listening tools claim “30+ sources”?
Because a number is easier to advertise than a list, and harder to check. Here is how to test a coverage claim in about ten minutes.
Read the answerWhat is the difference between social listening and brand monitoring?
Monitoring is the record of every mention. Listening is what you do with it. Most tools sell both under whichever name their buyer searches for.
