Instagram monitoring

Nobody argues about your product here. They photograph it.

A mention on Instagram is a picture and four words. That makes it weaker as an opinion and far stronger as evidence — whoever posted it owns one.

dani.ferreira which one is this? we are looking at Quillo for ours

InstagramCaptions and tagged posts are what we track. Comments are shown for context.

Two posts, 2,418 and 6,902 likes, both tagging you on the photograph. The question underneath is a buyer asking which one it is — and it sits in a comment, which is not what we read.

Why Instagram specifically

A thread tells you what people think. A photograph tells you who has one.

Everywhere else you are reading opinions. Here you are looking at your product on somebody's counter, in somebody's warehouse, on somebody's scanner. They bought it, opened it and chose to be seen with it. That is a different kind of signal, and the caption is rarely more than a sentence of it.

Of those, never tagged your account

69%

185 of 268. They typed the name into a caption instead, and a caption does not notify anybody.

Posts per day, last three weeks

The five groups above sum to the 268 total. The peaks are weekends.

Your notifications hold 83 of these. The other 185 are people who photographed your product and typed your name without the @, and they are the ones you would never otherwise meet.

What you can track

The caption is short. The account behind it is not.

There is little to read on an Instagram post and a lot to know about who made it. Followers, whether they sell, whether they tagged you, and whether this is the first time.

  • Tagged posts

Someone puts your account on the photograph itself. It is the one thing here that reaches your notifications.

83 of 268 last month. The rest never did.

  • Captions without the tag

People type the name flat, lowercase, no @. Instagram treats that as ordinary text and tells you nothing.

“swapped our scanners for fernway last month” is about you.

  • Creators and resellers

Accounts with an audience posting your product as proof of their own taste, often before any deal exists.

A reseller with 40,000 followers is a partnership nobody has asked for yet.

  • The week it arrives

Unboxing, first setup, first complaint about the packaging. It happens once per customer and never again.

Miss it and you hear nothing until renewal.

From a photograph to a customer

One post is a picture. The account is the lead.

The picture tells you it happened. Everything worth doing next comes from who posted it and whether anyone has ever spoken to them.

    Or not

This one tagged you, so it reached your notifications. Two in three do not.

  3. 03Read

    Caption and account

Who posted it, what they sell, how many follow them, whether this is their first post about you.

  4. 04Answered

    By a person

Somebody replies as themselves, or asks whether they would like to do this properly.

Worked example

  1. “not chased a single missing shipment @Fernway”
  2. Alert in Slack, tagged post
  3. 40,000 followers, sells to depots
  4. Partnerships reaches out the same week

See who has one, not just who mentioned you.

Name the brands, products and phrases that matter, or let us propose them from your website. Public captions and tagged posts, with the account behind each one and the buying questions pulled out.

What we track here is public captions and tagged posts. The comments underneath a post are not covered, so a question left in a comment thread will not reach you. What we never do: post, comment, like, follow, message anyone or automate anything inside Instagram. Private accounts, Stories, direct messages and anything behind a login are not covered.
