Buyer signals

Most mentions are conversation. Some are a person with a budget.

A mention counter cannot tell the difference between someone describing your category and someone asking which one to buy this week. That difference is the only part of listening with a number attached to it.

  1. Intent 92RedditReddit · r/projectmanagement · 2h

“Three demos booked for next week and a budget signed off. Anything I should be asking that the sales decks will not tell me?”

In market · Budget stated, timeline stated, decision inside a week. This is the highest score the model gives.

  2. Intent 74LinkedInLinkedIn · comment · 6h

“We have outgrown the spreadsheet. Not urgent, but I am going to have to solve this before the new quarter.”

Warming · A real problem with a vague date. Worth a useful answer now, not a pitch.

  3. Intent 21QuoraQuora · question · 1d

“What is the difference between these tools, conceptually? Writing something up for a class.”

Not a buyer · The score exists to keep this one out of your Slack channel.

Three posts that a mention counter would file identically. The score is not magic — it is reading for budget, timing and whether anybody is being asked to choose.

The problem with counting

A mention counter tells you the weather. It cannot point at anyone.

Volume goes up, volume goes down, and neither tells you what to do on a Tuesday. The useful subset of any month's mentions is small, specific and has a deadline attached to it.

A month of mentions, sorted

Of a month's mentions, worth interrupting somebody for

38

Three per cent of 1,284. The other 1,246 are worth reading, worth counting and worth reporting — but not worth a notification.

High-intent signals per week

The four rows above sum to the 1,284 total.

Nothing here is about finding more. It is about finding the thirty-eight, on the day they happen, and leaving the other twelve hundred in a report where they belong.

What the score reads

Four things that separate a buyer from a browser.

The score is not sentiment and it is not enthusiasm. Somebody can be delighted with your category and be years from buying anything.

  • Are they choosing?

Is a decision actually being made, or is this a description of a problem in general?

“Which of these” scores differently from “what even is this”.

  • Is there a date?

A stated timeline, a renewal, a quarter, a launch — anything that turns interest into a deadline.

The strongest single input to the score.

  • Is there a budget?

Stated or implied: a team size, a plan they have outgrown, an approval already signed off.

Often in the replies rather than the post.

  • Who else is named?

The alternatives mentioned in the thread, which is the shortlist you are actually on.

Or the one you are missing from.

From a post to a person

Three per cent of the month, on the day it happens.

The value of a buyer signal collapses with time. A thread answered on the day reads as helpful; the same answer a fortnight later reads as a search alert with a sales tag on it.

  1. 01Collected

    1,284

Every public conversation about the brand and its category in a month.

  2. 02Separated

    118 asking

The subset where somebody is choosing rather than commenting.

  3. 03Scored

    38 above 70

Budget or timing present, and an alternative already named.

  4. 04Routed

    In minutes

To Slack, with the thread, the author and what they asked for.

Worked example

  1. “Three demos booked and a budget signed off”
  2. Intent 92 · two competitors named in the replies
  3. In the right Slack channel within minutes
  4. Answered publicly by a named employee

Find the thirty-eight while they are still asking.

Paste your website. We build listeners for your category, not just your name, and score what comes back.

What we do not do: write the reply, send a message or add anyone to a list. We find the thread and hand it over. A buyer signal answered by a person who says where they work converts; the same answer from an anonymous account gets removed by a moderator. Buyer signals with intent scores are on Growth at $129 a month.
