Facebook monitoring

Somebody just recommended you in a room you cannot join.

Facebook happens in groups, and a group is joined rather than followed. The people in it recognise each other. A recommendation there lands harder than any advert, and none of it reaches your Page.

Buying question

Down to Fernway and Quillo for six depots. Anyone running either at that size?

Two years of spreadsheets and I am done guessing where a pallet is.

Three months on Fernway across four sites. Rollout took a week and the depot managers picked it up without training.

Reporting is thinner than I would like. Everything else has been quiet, which is the point.

Worth a look at Quillo before you decide — our depot module ships next month.

FacebookPublic Pages and group posts are what we track. Comments are shown for context.

Two posts, two groups, 59,800 members between them, and nobody from any company being discussed is in either room. The competitor pitching underneath sits in a comment, which is not what we read.

Why Facebook specifically

A group is not an audience. It is a room, and you are outside it.

People follow a Page. They join a group. That one word is the difference between an audience you can talk to and a room that talks about you without you — and the room is where the recommendations happen, because everyone in it joined for the same reason and half of them already know each other.

138 of 194. Joining is not the answer either — a company account asking to be let in is the fastest way to be shown the door.

Posts per day, last three weeks

The five groups above sum to the 194 total.

People ask their peers before they ask you. By the time a question reaches your support inbox it has usually been answered by four strangers in a group, and whatever they said is what the asker now believes.

What you can track

The group is the segment, so track it as one.

A mention in a 41,200-member depot group and the same words in a local buy-and-sell are two different audiences and two different jobs. Read them apart or you learn nothing from either.

  • Group by group

Pick the rooms that matter and see each separately, with its own volume, sentiment and themes.

A depot group and a fleet owners' group do not want the same thing.

  • Posts that name you

Nobody tags a Page inside a group. They type the product name, and Facebook tells you nothing.

“Down to Fernway and Quillo for six depots” is a buyer, in public, today.

  • Reports back

The post somebody writes weeks after they switched, to the same room that advised them.

It is the closest thing to a reference call you will ever read.

  • Problems asked of peers

People ask a group before they open a ticket, so the complaint appears here first and is answered by strangers.

Four wrong answers become what the room believes.

From a room to a reply

You cannot join the room. You can know what was said in it.

A company account asking to be let into a group is the fastest way to be shown the door. Reading what is public is not the same thing, and it is the part that is allowed.

    One question

“Down to Fernway and Quillo for six depots. Anyone running either at that size?” 41,200 members.

  2. 02Answered

    By four peers

The room replies. They have used one, or they know somebody who did, and nobody in it sells anything.

  3. 03Decided

    Before you hear

The asker has a shortlist by the afternoon, built entirely out of other people's experience.

  4. 04Reached

    Somewhere else

You answer where you are welcome — your own Page, a reply on another channel, or a sales note that already knows the context.

Worked example

  1. “Fernway or Quillo for six depots?”
  2. Alert in Slack, group named
  3. 41,200 members, none of them yours
  4. Sales opens with the six depots, not a script

Hear the room without walking into it.

Name the brands, competitors and phrases that matter, or let us propose them from your website. Public Pages and public group posts, group by group, with the buying questions pulled out.

What we track here is public Pages and public group posts. The comments underneath a post are not covered, so an answer left in a comment thread will not reach you. That costs more here than elsewhere: a question asked of a group is usually answered in its comments. Private and closed groups are not readable at all, by us or by anyone outside them. What we never do: post, comment, react, join a group, message anyone or automate anything inside Facebook.
